ROUTE MAP FOR DELIBERATIVE GOVERNANCE
The main component of the Collective is that of actually ideating and building a collaboratory through a critical reflection of past experiences and shared aspirational vision of the future. We wish to build such a collaboratory by following respectful practices which are equitable, transparent and reflexive. As one of the few south-south civil society collaborative initiatives in the Indian Ocean region, we have an opportunity to do things better.
Here is our process for building workable and sustainable partnerships
STAGE ONE: RECRUITMENT
We look for new partners. In consultation with all the Co-PIs, we engage in the process of recruiting new partners to Southern Collective. There are two avenues to recruitment
Consideration and Inviting
Personal/professional, well-known contacts
Via networks. Professional contacts of those we know. We might have to learn about them and their work
Folks whose work we may know of but are connected to. Cold calling (in this case, emailing)
Known folks we may not have invited for whatever reason but who approach us
Known via networks. We may have to learn about them and their work
Fully unknown. We may have to learn about them and their work
STAGE TWO: INTERVIEW
We conduct a semi-structured interview which captures their ideas about partnership, approaches, their expectations from Southern Collective. If partners prefer, we can also send them a questionnaire and request detailed answers.
STAGE THREE: FOCUS GROUPS
Having analysed the interview responses and created the report, SC Core Group will have an idea as to partner interests. We group them into smaller teams and ask them to deliberate on certain themes and mechanisms.
STAGE FOUR: COLLATION, ANALYSIS, REPORTING (Round Two)
The SC Core Group will look at the findings of all the interviews, literature review, and focus groups, work out the contradictions/retain them/find ways of working with them, write the report and send it to the partners.
STAGE FIVE: FINALISE THE REPORT
The SC Core Group put out the report which will be reviewed periodically.
This Process will, of course, have to be flexible. Not all partners will have the same amount of interest and investment. Not all partners may enter the collective at the same time. We work with that and involve people as much as we can and together agree on.
